“Sight” is an 8-minute film created by Eran May-raz and Daniel Lazo as their graduation project from Bezaleal Academy of Arts. The film follows the nightly exploits of a young man who has been outfitted with an artificial vision system called SIGHT.
We see the technology in action from a first person perspective with several clever apps including a flight simulator, a cooking app that uses gamification, and a dating app that suggests appropriate responses to social cues. The film takes a bit of a dark twist at the end, which I interpret as a commentary about the dangers of cybernetic enhancement.
As far-fetched as it might seem, this scenario is not far off. The majority of the technology already exists but is not yet available in a commercial form. The growing real world impact of massively multiplayer virtual worlds, inexpensive and innovative hardware like The Leap and Oculus Rift, and the cross platform and in-browser 3d abilities of HTML5, paint a very cyber-punk picture of the next decade.
How will this new technology affect design? Information may be organized to take more advantage of peripheral. New methods of interacting will reveal new difficulties, new forms of “Gorilla Arm”. You think carpal tunnel is bad, wait till we are navigating with subtle eye movements!
